Four days. If a run of cooler days cuts down the time you spend outside, the heat tolerance you built up over the height of summer may start to break down in just that many days — that's how we see it. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's "Heat Illness Prevention Manual for Workplaces" describes "heat acclimatization" — the adjustment by which the body gets used to heat, changing how quickly it sweats and how much the heart rate rises — by stating that once exposure to heat is interrupted, a marked loss of acclimatization begins after four days, and it is completely lost after three to four weeks. It could be a sign your body has already started letting go of that tolerance.

It takes seven days or more to gain it. Losing it takes just four

Heat acclimatization refers to the set of adjustments the body makes when repeatedly exposed to hot conditions: sweating starts sooner, blood flow to the skin increases, and the rise in heart rate becomes more gradual. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's workplace manual gives, as one example of building acclimatization from an unacclimatized state, "gradually lengthening heat exposure time over a period of seven days or more." The more time you've spent in the heat over the month since the rainy season ended, the more of that adjustment your body has built up.

The trouble is, the time it takes to gain this and the time it takes to lose it are nowhere close to balanced. An adjustment built up over seven days or more starts to break down after just four days without heat exposure, and can return close to baseline within three to four weeks. Gaining it is slow; losing it is sudden. I'd count a run of cooler days that keeps you indoors as one thing that can interrupt that exposure. Without knowing about this asymmetry, it's easy to mistake a shift in how your body feels — "I was fine last week, but today feels unusually rough" — for nothing more than having let your guard down.

It starts breaking down in four days, and returns to baseline in three to four weeks

What these numbers point to isn't the heat of high summer itself, but the state of your body's readiness. The season when "I'm already used to it" trips you up

What makes the end of August tricky is the timing: cooler days start mixing in right when your sense that "I'm already used to the heat this year" is at its strongest. When a typhoon passes or the early autumn rain front brings a few cooler days in a row, it's easy to let your guard down, spend more time in air-conditioned rooms, and less time outside. If that comes close to being an interruption in heat exposure, it wouldn't be strange for acclimatization to start slipping in just those few days — and once you think of it that way, the rough patch on a day when the late-summer heat comes back starts to make sense.

If so, the view worth holding here isn't "I've already built up heat tolerance this year," but rather "that tolerance only holds while you keep it up." Welcoming cooler days while not letting your body's readiness drop back to zero isn't a matter of grit or endurance. I see it instead as a way of finding a manageable balance with the late-summer heat that may well continue into September.

The cooler the day, the more worth it to step outside, even briefly

  1. Even on cooler days, try setting aside 10 to 15 minutes during the day to be outside. The longer you spend indoors, the fewer chances your body gets to be exposed to heat.

If you only do one thing today, this is enough: on cooler days especially, try making a conscious effort to spend just 10 minutes outside. I won't go so far as to say that alone will preserve your heat tolerance, but at least it keeps your body from surrendering entirely to the cool.
