What does it actually mean to be tired? The Japanese Society of Fatigue Science already has an answer ready for that question: "fatigue" and "the sensation of fatigue" are not the same thing. The first refers to a decline in capacity caused by overload on mind and body; the second is the sense of noticing that decline. The society notes that "fatigue is sometimes used to distinguish between 'fatigue' and 'the sensation of fatigue.'" Mistaking a hard-driving person who never seems tired for someone who genuinely isn't tired may just be confusing these two things.

One word, "tired," but the society split it into two

Japanese has a single everyday word for "tired," but the Japanese Society of Fatigue Science treats it as two layers. "Fatigue" is the drop in capacity itself; "the sensation of fatigue" is the awareness of that drop, usually accompanied by discomfort and a loss of motivation. The introduction to the society's clinical evaluation guideline for anti-fatigue products estimates that about 60% of Japan's working population — 47.2 million people — is aware of feeling fatigued, based on a 1999 government survey. That is the scale of the sensation the society chose to split in two. An appendix to that same guideline, titled "Evaluating the Sensation of Fatigue in Anti-Fatigue Clinical Evaluation," lays out a recommended test for that sensation: a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) method. What you measure changes how you measure it.

Osaka Metropolitan University's Center for Health Science Innovation places fatigue alongside pain and fever as one of the "three great biological alarms" — a warning that the body has been pushed too hard. For research purposes, the center defines fatigue as "a statistically significant drop in work efficiency or performance caused by excessive physical or mental activity," a definition that holds regardless of whether the person notices anything at all.

Feeling "off" isn't always an accurate alarm

Sticking with the alarm metaphor: the trouble is that the body's alarm doesn't always ring when it should. An article from Kenkocho Net (Longevity Science) walks through how lactate, once blamed for fatigue, turned out not to be the culprit behind performance decline. Even the scientific understanding of how fatigue works has been revised from the inside.

The same logic explains why fatigue and its sensation can drift apart. A person's capacity can be falling while they notice nothing, or a person can feel heavy and worn out while their capacity hasn't actually moved — both are possible. The clinical evaluation guideline's list of assessment items, in fact, places objective measures like reaction time and accuracy alongside subjective ones like the fatigue VAS. Self-report and an actual drop in capacity read, to me, as two things meant to be checked separately. The more "I'm fine" a person has said, does the alarm get quieter?

From here on, this is interpretation, not fact. People who get called hard-driving are, I'd guess, people who kept moving through fatigue and, time after time, ended up fine anyway. My read is that this very streak of "I was fine" may be what wears down the sensitivity of the alarm called fatigue sensation. An alarm that gets ignored and turns out fine again and again eventually rings less often. It isn't that these people are bad at resting — it may be that the sense telling them when to rest wore out first.

In a culture that prizes being tireless around the clock, not showing fatigue gets treated as a virtue. But that doesn't prove the fatigue itself is gone. Tuning an alarm so it stops ringing and putting out the fire are two entirely different things.

Set the sensation of fatigue aside as your only gauge, just for a moment

  1. On the days you feel least tired, check one sign other than how you feel. Work speed, careless mistakes, how long decisions take — these can slip before the feeling does.
  2. Schedule rest before the feeling shows up, not after. The "build rest in before you're worn out" approach from our pieces on active rest and the science of rest is, among other things, a way of designing rest that doesn't depend on the sensation of fatigue.
  3. Every so often, count how many times you've said "I'm fine." A high count in a given stretch isn't proof of energy — it might be a sign the alarm's sensitivity has dropped.

Weeks of barely feeling tired at all, or weeks where the sensation of fatigue itself sits heavy and won't lift — either pattern, if it persists, is reason enough to talk to a doctor rather than sort it out on your own. Knowing the gauge can drift and still trusting only that gauge is, I think, a little too naive. Is today's "I'm not tired" an honest report from your body, or an alarm that's been tuned not to ring?
